Finding your “community” through activity
I admit it. Activity is easy for me. I have been active my entire life. I am not a praticualry good athlete. In fact, I am a horrible one. I am not very strong and not really good at any activity. I also do not care. I love being active. Mostly I love the community that comes along with it. As a child, my siblings and neighborhood friends played whatever sport was in season in the driveaway or back yard. We rode bikes and swam constantly.
In high school my best friends and best times were with my basketball and volleyball teams and in our dumpy weight room.
I was not good enough to play any college sport, so I became an athletic trainer to be around sports. Once I graduated, I found my community in my local gym and became a personal trainer. I have some of my best friends who started out as clients.
But what if you are a CHDer who was never made to go outside and play? Now what? Where will you find your community? Join a group fitness class. For sure you can do what they are doing in Zumba or Spin, or kick boxing. You many need to modify, but I bet you will find so many people who are willing to help you, and in fact, enjoy helping you, wish you would ask for help!
The best place to find your fellow CHDers is at a Heart Walk. When I started the one in Jacksonville, FL in 2013, I had no idea the wonderful people it would bring into my life. Join the committee for the ACHA Walk for 1 in 100, or the CHF Congenital Heart walk in your area. If you live in Jacksonville, the Healing Hearts Project walk that takes place in February and can use participants and volunteers. Getting involved in these events will provide you with a strong community and a great way to stay healthy. I promise you, they want your help and welcome your input
